The Apollo Era

On September 12, 1962, President Kennedy declared, “We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.” These words inspired a nation, ignited the Apollo program, and led to the development of the Saturn V. Designed by Wernher von Braun’s team, the Saturn V stood 363 feet tall, weighed 6.2 million pounds fully fueled, and generated 7.5 million pounds of thrust, making the Saturn V the most powerful rocket ever flown at the time. On July 16, 1969, it launched Apollo 11. Four days later, on July 20, humanity first set foot on another world.
