SpaceX was founded with the goal of making humanity multi-planetary. To power its fully reusable rocket system, Starship, they needed an engine built for rapid reuse. The result was Raptor. Producing 280 tons of thrust by burning liquid methane (CH4) and liquid oxygen (LOX) in a full-flow staged combustion cycle. With its record thrust-to-weight ratio and clean-burning methalox propellants, Raptor is incredibly complex yet highly efficient, perfectly suited for Starship. Clusters of Raptors power Super Heavy and Starship, pushing us closer to becoming a multi-planetary species.
