In its early days, Blue Origin needed a reliable, deeply throttleable engine for safe vertical launch and landing. The result was the Blue Engine-3 Propulsive Module (BE-3PM). Utilizing liquid hydrogen (LH2) and liquid oxygen (LOX) in a combustion tap-off cycle, the BE-3PM produces 50 tons of thrust at sea level while throttling down to just 9 tons for precise landings. This capability enabled the fully reusable New Shepard system, proving that suborbital rocket boosters could launch, land gently, and fly again a major milestone on the road to routine reusability.
