NASA needed a monster engine to power the mighty Saturn V. They contracted Rocketyne to develop and deliver an engine with 680 tons of thrust, and it had to be reliable. Rocketdyne delivered. Using a gas-generator cycle with liquid oxygen (LOX) and refined kerosene (RP-1), the F-1 became the most powerful single-chamber liquid rocket engine ever built. Burning over three tons of propellant every second, the F-1 helped lift humans toward the Moon. From Apollo to Skylab, the F-1 never failed in flight and remains unmatched decades later.
